In California when I started teaching many years ago, everyone was given a coach for their first two years. It’s a pretty formal program that is taken seriously—with rules, timelines, mandatory meetings between the teacher and coach, and a culminating project that incorporates lots of reflection and evidence to support the teacher’s growth.

At first I wasn’t too sure how to approach my coaching relationship. I’d been a lifelong athlete and on baseball or soccer teams since I was a little boy and had one vision of a “coach” in my brain, and this experience was so much different and so necessary.

The coach that took me under her wing was another teacher at my school, someone with years of experience. They’d attended a coaching clinic and been certified to do this type of work with new teachers, and it was exactly what I needed and, in my opinion, what everyone needs no matter where they are in their career.

A coach is meant to be objective, open, and honest, and to give the right feedback so that you grow as a professional. Every leader is a little bit different, and every coach will have different characteristics as well, but the coach should have a more narrow focus that is completely objective.

Coaches listen without passing judgment on performance because it’s meant to be a learning relationship. Sometimes their listening is just that, without any advice or counsel, because everyone needs someone to vent to every now and then.

Be careful with sharing too many work stories with your spouse, significant other, or friends—they’re going to get tired of your work stories and someday may end up not even listening at all.

Coaches advise, because they’re not giving you a formal evaluation. They’re working with you so you can learn and grow as a professional.
